The leader of Swansea council, Lawrence Bailey is reported as saying
that the profligate waste of money voted for by the assembly yesterday
is
A " problem is the way this issue has been presented."
Shan Wilkinson, apparently speaking on behalf of Wrexham council
appears to have forgotten that councillors are volunteers and are
recompensed for their time by saying:
"If people are going to become councillors, you have to give them
financial support."
Jeff James, leader of the Vale of Glamorgan concil thinks that the
money for this "councillors retirement fund" is given by the good
fairy, not by the Welsh taxpayer:
"But we understand that the assembly is funding it fully, so council
voted to accept it."
The leader of Denbighshire, Eryl Williams thinks it's a good idea
because some of the taxpayers money will be returned to the coffers of
Westminster in the form of tax - that's OK then:
"Around £7,000 of the £20,000 will be taken up by tax and National
Insurance. " - Not too sure about Eryls mathematical skills - I make
it around £4,600!
Meryl Gravell (Carms) has obviously read from the same book of lame
excuses as Eryl Williams:
"There will be no extra burden on taxpayers from Carmarthenshire for
the scheme as it is Assembly funded"
Allan Pritchard of Caerphilly council thinks the money will be a good
way of bailing profligate councillors, who haven't bothered to save
for their retirement, out of a hole when they retire - everyone else
has to make their own provisions for retirement:
"If someone has been doing their civic duties for many years, they
will have missed out on pensions."
Angelsey councillor John Chorlton thinks that the job of a councillor
is so difficult that they deserve extra money, over and above their
generous allowances:
"I believe that councillors should get some recompense for what is a
hard job." Should councillor Chorlton be in post if his memory is as
poor as it appears?
Does anyone care to comment on the apparent rush by certain
councillors to grab as much of our money as they can?
